Start with the data you need
If a bank provides both a PDF statement and a structured export, the export usually avoids reconstructing a table from page layout. Keep the statement for comparison. For a destination import, first confirm its accepted format and account-mapping requirements.
Source formats
- Bank statements: documents vs transaction exports — A bank statement describes activity for an account and period. Its PDF is a document for people to read; its visual rows are not the same thing as a transaction database.
- OFX bank files: fields, dates and account identity — Open Financial Exchange can carry structured financial records. FinanceConvert reads its bank-transaction subset, which is more explicit than a table reconstructed from a PDF.
- QFX files and Quicken Web Connect compatibility — A QFX file carries Web Connect data associated with a financial institution. Being able to read its bank transactions is different from being able to authorize it for import into Quicken.
- QBO files: bank transactions vs company backups — The letters QBO can refer to QuickBooks Online, but a .qbo file is a bank transaction file. It is not a complete export of an online company or a QuickBooks company backup.
- QIF files: dates, fields and import limits — Quicken Interchange Format is a text exchange format. In a bank transaction list, each line starts with a field code and a transaction ends with a standalone caret line.
- IIF files: TRNS, SPL and account mapping — Intuit Interchange Format uses tab-delimited records. Accounting transaction groups contain a main TRNS entry and related SPL entries, followed by ENDTRNS.
- Bank CSV: columns, amounts and date conventions — Diagnose conflicting amounts, duplicate headers and ambiguous dates.
